Visit the villages around Skadar Lake! - part II

While exploring old settlements around Skadar Lake, one will get to know not only the history and architecture of this region, but better understand the way of living around these places. Apart from towns Virpazar and Rijeka Crnojevića, smaller settlements around the lake represent a real hidden gems.

Vranjina is the settlement near the main road connecting Podgorica and Bar. Vranjina is also an island and a hill that rises above the Vranjina village. The village Vranjina is known as the Montenegrin Venice as it has the similar natural settlement. On the island, the popular feature is Vranjina Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries in Montenegro. Vranjina is a fishing spot and in the fish caught here one can enjoy in several restaurants situated close to the village.

Karuč and Dodoši are close to each other. They are often visited in the same day and this is one of the most beautiful tours. In package with them, one can also visit Bobija hill which is considered to have one of the most beautiful views on Skadar Lake. Dodoši is situated on the river and is one of the favorite places for swimming. Close to Dodoši is Žabljak Crnojevića which one can reach in half an hour, through amazing nature and a road that reminds of safari one. Karuč is much smaller place, more rural and situated at the foot of the hill. Close to Karuč are Pavlova strana and Rijeka Crnojevića.

As from my perspective, villages Poseljani and Godinje are the most interesting and authentic spots. 7 km away from Virpazar, Godinje is a village dating from X century with all the houses connected by the tunnels who were before used in order to protect themselves from Turks and today some of them are wine cellars. Godinje is also specific as it has around 10 springs of drinkable water. Poseljani village is situated on the half way between Virpazar and Rijeka Crnojevića. Poseljani was a very significant village in the past. Thanks to the river that flows through Poseljani, there were many mills operating all day long. Today, they are in ruins, but the village stayed untouched and authentic.
