A Hvar Island fairy-tale

Once upon a time, there was a prince who lived on one beautiful island. The prince was happy to wake up every morning with a beautiful view of the Adriatic Sea, while his island was wholly covered with lavender and vineyards. Usually, he would love to go up in** the old town of Hvar or to visit nearby villages or just to sail around its 250 km long coast. This could be a real Hvar Island fairy-tale. I only used the facts, and if you want to feel like a prince or a princess, follow me to this sunny island**.

Hvar is the sunniest island in Croatia, and it belongs to the Split-Dalmatia County. It is surrounded by "three big islands" - Korčula, Mljet and Brač, and it is the fourth biggest Croatian island in Croatia.

Hvar is different from all other islands. It is the king of all of them, since it's the only one to have "the crown". If you zoom a bit the map of the Adriatic Sea, and you'll notice that the small islands Paklinski otoci are a crown-like formation on the northwest of Hvar.

Hvar island has (for me) the perfect climate. The average temperature is not higher than 30'C and not lower than 20'C. That's why we can call it the island of eternal spring. The best period to visit Hvar would be May and June - the weather is great, there are not many people and the last year's wines are just opened.

There are four big settlements: Hvar (city), Jelsa, Stari Grad, and Sućuraj. The city of Hvar** serves as a capital of the island. The city of Hvar will stay in your memory like a stone city, since many buildings are made of stone (which is manure in this part of Europe). While you are in Hvar**, go out and take a glass of local wine, walk around the town and enjoy the view on the neighboring islands, while the wind with a lavender smell is in your hair. If you want to leave the island, the ferries and boats run pretty often to all the places in the vicinity.

From Split, you can book a direct ride to Jelsa, another nice and small town on the Hvar Island. Jelsa* is full of history and worth visiting if you are a history and religion enthusiast. Stari Grad **or Cittavecchia in Italian or Φάρος *in Greek is one of the oldest cities in Europe. So visiting this town, you will be privileged to be a part of history few thousands years old. If you are coming from the mainland Croatia - from Split** or Dubrovnik or from Bosnia and Herzegovina, you will definitely come first to Sućuraj, a small coastal town. Sućuraj **is a nice, small and quiet place and definitely worth a one-day visit.
