The southern areas like Dorset, Cornwall and Sussex are the best place to visit for beaches, sunshine and beautiful but rugged coastlines. The central area contains London and Birmingham, the two largest cities (10 million and 1 million people respectively) as well as slightly smaller cities like Liverpool and Manchester. These cities (the ones outside of London particularly) are becoming incredibly popular in the last few years, with amazing food, entertainment, art and culture growing year on year. The north of England holds much of the farming land, as well as stunning national parks like the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District. London has several airports that are the gateway to almost anywhere you’d like to visit in the world, and there are regional airports in many of the smaller cities as well, with Birmingham Airport and Liverpool Airport being amongst the cheapest. Getting around the country is easy and hassle-free, if slightly more expensive than public transport in mainland Europe. The trains run very well, and are clean, but they are quite expensive. Perhaps the best way to get around is by bus with two main companies – Megabus and National Express. English cuisine is really a mix of everything, with more than 50,000 pubs to find traditional England food, as well as a lot of Indian, Chinese food in almost every town and city as well.

Ireland has a rich culture that, along with its people, has been exported around the world. Ireland, in fact, has two cultures: the historical Gaelic culture and the more recent English-speaking culture which largely replaced it. It can be worth digging a bit deeper, to learn about the older world that lies beneath. It is a world still living, though not always visible. Some Irish history has been very dark indeed, but it remains a land of poets, story-tellers, and musicians, with marvellous scenery, an advanced knowledge economy, first-rate infrastructures, and leading industries, with a high gross domestic product and standard of living. There are the megalithic tombs of Brú na Bóinne, older than the Egyptian pyramids, used as inspiration for some famous Celtic symbols that came later.

The country also has almost 800 islands scattered around its coastline, with the largest and best known being the wind-swept little pieces of land called Shetland and Orkney (the Northern Isles) on the north-eastern coast and the Inner and Outer Hebrides on the north-western coast. Many people will know of some of the proud Scottish history from the hugely popular film ‘Braveheart’, about a famous rebel leader called William Wallace. The country has always had a somewhat difficult relationship with its English neighbours to the South, with a millennium of conflict and raiding before becoming part of Great Britain in the beginning of the 18th Century and part of the United Kingdom in the beginning of the 19th Century. Visiting Scotland is easy, with airports in Edinburgh and Glasgow, Aberdeen and Inverness. You can also reach it easily by train from almost any city in England. The most visited city in Scotland is undoubtedly Edinburgh, where charming streets, a dominating and historic castle and beautiful scenery all come together. Many people also visit the Cairngorms National Park in the northern part, and the Trossachs National Park to the west.

Even so, the Welsh language is persevering (and making a comeback), but it’s not necessary to speak any to visit. Wales is split into the mountainous and wild northern regions of the Snowdonia Mountains and the island of Anglesey, the central flatter areas that are mainly populated with small towns and villages, and the southern region with the larger cities like the capital, Cardiff, and Swansea and Llanelli as well. The two major national parks are the Snowdonia National Park and Brecon Beacons National Park, both of which are certainly among the most beautiful areas in the entire UK. Natural beauty is a mark of Wales, and there is more than 2700 kilometres of coastline, and a lot of mountains. The island of Anglesey is one of the world’s most important wind-sport venues, and also one of the quietest areas in the UK and is an ideal place to get away from the cities and enjoy nature. The capital city Cardiff is a fantastic city for sightseeing and for history, with the 1000-year-old Cardiff Castle containing Roman, Norman and medieval history. There are stadiums for sports events, huge arenas for music and shows as well as some of the best restaurants and bars in the UK.
