A timeless beauty of Kozjak Waterfalls

The two Kozjak Waterfalls are hidden gems of Northwest Slovenia, located near the town of Kobarid, in the Soča Valley, where you can have adventurous rafting experience. The larger, 15-meter high waterfall,* falling into a pool of clear water is only one of the six waterfalls** of the Kozjak stream, but unfortunately, only two of them are accessible to visitors. The bigger waterfall is also known as Veliki Kozjak Waterfall (the large Kozjak Waterfall), as there is a smaller, 8-meter waterfall called Mali Kozjak Waterfall, *located in the area as well. A hike** to this timelessly beautiful **spot in nature is not difficult and leads through large meadows and mystical forests, all while being accompanied by the beautiful, blue Soča river.

Plan your trip

You begin your *hike* to the waterfalls from the town of Kobarid. You can drive or walk to the Napoleon bridge over the river Soča, and then head a little further down the road leading in the direction of Drežnice. If you are by car, you can park on a parking space by the road in the direction of Drežnice and continue on foot. You will soon reach a wide tourist path that leads to the Kozjak Waterfalls. The path will firstly lead you through a large meadow and then pass into a mystical forest zone, where it will completely approach the Soča River. After a slight ascend and the crossing of a bridge over the Kozjak stream, you will get to see the smaller of the waterfalls - Mali Kozjak Waterfall.

From there, you continue your path in the marked direction through a forest until you reach a stream. The way forward climbs along a well-protected and secured path, which will bring you to the magnificent viewpoint of the large Kozjak Waterfall or *Slap Kozjak*. The fairy-tale-like view will take your breath away and leave you in awe of the beauty of nature.

There is also the possibility of not crossing the Napoleon bridge, but rather continuing your way straight ahead until you get to a hanging bridge, which is the perfect choice for a trip filled with a bit of adrenaline.

Preparation and inspiration

The complete hike from the town of Kobarid to the large Kozjak Waterfall should take you about an hour, depending on your abilities and walking pace. In any case, you should wear appropriate footwear so that you don’t fall or hurt yourself, as the trail can be slippery and rocky in some areas. If you would like to discover more spots like Kozjak Waterfalls, I would definitely recommend checking out one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Slovenia - Savica Waterfall. Its timeless beauty is so mesmerizing that it even became the inspiration of the greatest Slovenian poet, France Prešeren.
