Meet Liberec

Why visit Liberec?

Liberec is the 5th biggest city and sits in the Liberec region of the Czech Republic and is quite known for Jested Mountain and Jested Tower that has become quite a symbol for the city.

Many locals and Czechs visit the ski resort on Jested. We’ve been before and even though it’s not the biggest ski resort, the fact that it’s right on the edge of the city makes it convenient and quite good for the price.

Liberec’s history is quite fascinating because of its geographical location. Something you can learn about in the museums in the city. On top of that, the neighborhoods downtown and the old town square near the city hall are worth checking out.

Summer or winter, Liberec has so many things to do and see and even though it might not be the most recognized city in the Czech Republic it’s worth exploring.

When to go

Dec - March (Depending on the year)

Mar - Sep

Liberec is located in northern Bohemia and has similar weather to the rest of Bohemia besides winter. In winter you tend to have more snow up here in Liberec. On top of that, the Jested Mountain is right next to Liberec and makes for an awesome place to go skiing in the winter.

During the summer months, Liberec is fun to explore. The streets downtown are beautiful and in case you get too hot you can always go for a swim in the Aquapark that is quite famous in Liberec.

Transport

Getting There

By Car

If you’re coming to Liberec by car we recommend using this website here to find parking to see the prices. The best areas to park are in zone B, C, or D where the cost is less than 1€ per hour.

By Train

Liberec has a main train station right in the center of town which is very conveniently located. It’s close to the center of town and you can easily get to everywhere in Liberec from the train station.

By Bus

Liberec has a main bus station right in the center of town called Liberec - Fügnerova-Blažkova. The bus station is very conveniently located and you can easily get to everywhere in Liberec from it.

By Plane

Liberec doesn't have an international airport and the best option when flying to Czech would be flying into Prague. Then from Prague either renting a car, taking a bus, or taking a train to Liberec.

Good to know: When going to Liberec you can also look at BlaBlacar. It’s a popular ridesharing app that is used in the Czech Republic. Especially between Prague and Liberec you will see lots of people using the app. Share the cost and mingle with the locals, now that’s a win-win situation!

Liberec isn’t that big of a city so even parking in zone D you can get to the city centre relatively quickly by public transport or even walking. Most zones are actually free on the weekends so just check the signs on the street where you’re parking (or check the parking website).

Getting Around

By Bus and Tram

Tickets are sold through yellow vending machines at some stops, DPMB shops, kiosks, and railway stations The majority of the machines take both cash and card.

When riding the bus you can buy tickets from the driver with cash. Public transport within the city costs 25 CZK for an hour ticket

Another option is to use an SMS ticket, for this you send "LIB" or "LIB25" to the number 90206 (only recommended if your phone plan is active in Czech Republic - if not, expensive fees may apply).

By Car

You can look here for parking spots. Once you’re in the city though you can walk around everywhere or take a tram. The public transport in Liberec is great and the trams have been around since 1897.

By Bike

Liberec is quite a hilly city and isn’t known as a biking city. There are also some cobblestone streets and the busy traffic from the busses and trams make Liberec not an ideal biking city. The countryside and areas around Liberec is the complete opposite though with a bunch of amazing biking trails right outside of the city.

On Foot

Walking around Liberec is what we would recommend. It’s a nice way to find cute shops and cafes and to see things you wouldn’t see otherwise. If you’re staying somewhere quite central then you can walk everywhere.

By Taxi/Car Sharing: There really isn’t a need to take taxis in Liberec. The public transport is good and takes you almost anywhere. There are trains that go almost everywhere out of the city, and walking around Liberec is quite easy since the city isn’t too big.

In case you’re late for something or in a rush and need to get somewhere quick then we recommend just grabbing an Uber or Bolt (Bolt is the more popular option). This way you’ll know exactly how much you’re going to pay beforehand and you know you’re with a legit driver.

In case you can’t hunt down an Uber you can always take one of the electric scooters that are around the city.
