Much of the country consists of peninsulas and islands in the Aegean, Ionian, and Mediterranean Seas. It borders Albania, the Republic of Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Turkey. Ancient Greece was one of Europe's first urban civilizations, and the origin of much of the arts, language, philosophy, politics, and sports of western society. The cultural heritage and spectacular mountains and beaches draw tourists from far away. Eighty percent of Greece is mountainous, with Mount Olympus being the highest peak at 2,918 metres. The country consists of nine geographic regions: Macedonia, Central Greece, the Peloponnese, Thessaly, Epirus, the Aegean Islands, Thrace and Crete. Few countries can pride themselves on a heritage as important to Western civilization as Greece. A range of first class historic landmarks remind one of the days when the great Greek emperors and writers made their mark on the development of science, literature and democracy. No less than 17 of those monuments are listed as World Heritage Sites. However, the many charming little islands, sandy beaches and picturesque whitewashed coastal towns are at least as much a reason to come for the millions of tourists that this Mediterranean country receives each year.

Greece

Among your priorities should be a visit to the city of Athens to see all the heritage of the ancient greek culture and of course the Parthenon, Greece’s most famous attraction. There are also many more places to see. Do not forget to check the “Modern sites” of Athens such as the Panathinaiko Stadium or the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Once you finish sightseeing, give yourself a relaxed day among the beaches on the south of Athens which you can easily reach in a very short time. You can also go on a cruise to see the islands around. The region also offers parks and nature all around the city. Make sure you climb on the hills to see Lycabettus and Pnyx, Philopappos hill and Ardettos hill for one of the best panoramic views of the whole city.

Ohrid

Macedonia has some 748 km of boundaries, shared with Serbia to the North, Kosovo to the northwest, Bulgaria to the east, Greece to the south, and Albania to the west. It is a transit way for shipment of goods from Greece, through the Balkans, towards Eastern, Western and Central Europe and through Bulgaria to the east.

The landscape of the region is made of lakes and mountains. If you are a nature lover you should probably make a stop in the region, in the Ohrid Lake, the Prespa Lake, the Karaorman mountains, the Illinska mountains or the Smolari waterfalls. There are also some nice monasteries to visit, such as the monastery of Bogorodica and the monastery of Saint Leontius.

Belgrade

Serbia numbers around 7 million residents. Its capital, Belgrade, ranks among the oldest and largest cities in Southeastern Europe. The Pannonian Plain covers the northern third of the country (Vojvodina and Mačva) while the easternmost tip of Serbia extends into the Wallachian Plain. Serbia's many sights include stunning castles, Medieval monasteries, lovely traditional villages and bustling cities with baroque parks and art-deco architecture. Largest national park in the country is Đerdap in the eastern part of the country, on the border with Romania. It consists of the Djerdap gorge thru which the river Danube runs and its beautiful surroundings of almost untouched nature.

Serbia

Partially cleared forests were transformed into vineyards and orchards. Wine from Župa and the royal cellars in Oplenac are droplets of history distilled into tradition. The villages of central Serbia nurture the tradition of good health, typical of this region. Central Serbia is often thought of as one big fruit and vegetable garden with a big product production annually. Chose among fishing, hunting, skiing, swimming or horse-riding, as they are the main activities you should try in this region.

The landscape of the region is divided into two different types: one mountainous with the Baba mountains, and the other flat with the eponymous plain. If you are a nature lover, stop by the National Park Pelister, Krusevo Lake or Marble Lake. If you like history, there are also many places to visit such as Heraclea Lyncestis, the Shirok Solak Street, the Clock tower of Bitola, the Treshaver Monastery, the Tose Proeski Memorial house and Saint Archangel Michael Monastery.

The region is so in the middle of all the european culture, so you will find churches, mosques and synagogues. The region also has many castles and old forteresses that are waiting to be explored. If you want to see the nature you have to go to Fruska Gora a huge natural park at the south of Novi Sad. Also it possesses a dozen of monasteries of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Combining the European Baroque with the Byzantine traditions of the Balkans, these churches have a cultural importance as a bridge between the Southern and the Northern Serbs.

Almost two-thirds of Albania’s geography is either hilly or mountainous. These enable outdoor recreation potential and of course impressing off road cycling. There is a renewed interest in adventure tourism in Albania with towns like Vermosh, Thethi, Razëm, Bogë, and Valbona serving as destination points for expeditions. In the mountains you can also find cultural experiences. You can also explore Albania’s pearl, Albanian Coastline. The Albanian coast begins in the northwest at the Buna River delta, which marks the Albania-Montenegro border, and extends southward until it reaches Stillo Cape  at the Albanian-Greek border. Including various lagoons and harbors, the coast stretches for a total of 450 km and touches two seas: the Ionian in the south and the Adriatic in the north.

Mostly mountainous, it has access to a tiny portion of the Adriatic Sea coastline in the south. Great natural attractions can be found all around, even close to the main cities. Top picks for village life can be found in the historic citadel of Počitelj, Blagaj or, for environmentalists, in the Zelenkovac ecovillage near Mrkonjić Grad. Just outside of Radimlja is the largest collection of Stećak, a remarkable kind of pre-Ottoman tombstones that are found throughout the ancient Bosnian Kingdom.
