Nitra is the fifth largest city in Slovakia, so there is a lot to explore, and you shouldn't miss it while traveling through our beautiful country. Here´s why: Nitra is a young city with many university students, a rich history and a beautiful medieval city center with many churches. Also, it is easily accessible, there are frequent buses and trains from Bratislava or other cities in Slovakia. Take a look at this one-day itinerary and make sure you get the best of Nitra while you are here.

9:00-11:00 Zobor

You can start your day with a little morning hike. It is suitable for your health, and as a reward, you will get the best view on Nitra. Zobor is a hill near the city and on the top of the hill is a TV tower of the same name. There used to be a cable car that would take you up the hill, but unfortunately it is not functioning anymore. To go up and down shouldn't take more than two hours; however, some parts might be steep.

11:00-13:30 Nitriansky Hrad + Castellum cafe

Nitriansky Hrad is the main castle, located in the city center. The castle was built in the 11th century. The newer parts of the castle come from the 14th century, built in a Gothic style, or from the 18th century, built in a Baroque style. You can choose a guided tour or walk by yourself. Right under the castle, there is a cute cafe and a restaurant called Castellum cafe. Finally, after your morning hike and a castle tour you can reward yourself with a delicious lunch. Fantastic view on the historic castle and the city center of Nitra are included free of charge.

13:30-15:30 City center

The city center of Nitra is not very big, so it shouldn't take that much time to explore it. You can walk around and soak up the atmosphere, but there are a few places I would like to point out. For example, Divadlo Andreja Bagara is a theater built in a modern style, also exciting to see from the inside if you like modern design and architecture. Another point of interest would be a beautiful synagogue with a national Holocaust memorial exhibition or countless churches in the historic downtown.

15:30-16:30 Pod Vrškom

Pod Vrškom will be a dreams-come-true kind of place for every bookworm out there. It is a bookstore and a music store together with antiquary. The interesting part about this bookstore is that it pays attention to what it sells, so every book is thoughtfully picked. This store is eco-friendly and employs disabled people. If you want to support the idea, you can buy a book as a souvenir. Part of the place is also a lovely cafe with a reading corner, where you can relax, and enjoy the unique atmosphere.

16:30 - 18:30 Hidepark

Hidepark is something like an autonomous cultural and community center. It started as a place where people hang out and organize small concerts when a local underground club closed down. Nowadays, it is not only about music, but you can find there a community garden, beehives, library, skatepark, bar, and much more. Also, a public grill is available, that you can use when you bring your food. There are interesting events such as concerts, debates, or markets. Check out their website to see what is going on at the time of your visit.

18:30-21:30 Beer Time

From Hidepark, you can walk back to the historical city center and see the town after the sunset. There is a place called Beer Time, where you can enjoy your lunch after an exhausting day walking around Nitra. They have different kinds of burgers, loaded fries or tortilla and of course local craft beer. If you are not in the mood for beer and burgers, there are a lot of other amazing places to eat or have a drink in a walking distance, so pick the one you like the most.

I hope this itinerary will allow you to see the best of Nitra in one day. There is, of course, more, those places are just some highlights, so if you are thinking about a whole weekend, don't worry, you won't be bored. Nitra is a fantastic city that has a lot to offer, whether you prefer going to museums or just enjoying local cafes
