Exploring Vagar Island on the Faroe Archipelago

After having visited Faroe Islands' charming capital town, Torshavn, it’s time to embark on another adventure. Just a quick reminder; no matter where on the Faroe Islands you go, you won't get bored! Whichever of the 18 islands you wish to discover, there will definitely be something to see.

Once you arrive on the Faroe Islands or in Torshavn, it’s best to rent a car, as this will be the easiest way to get around. If you are not comfortable with that option, you can find a "Bil (car) Taxi office" in central Torshavn, which is basically a taxi company that can pick you up and guide you around the archipelago. 

Gasadalur Village

Once you land in the Faroe Islands make your way to Gasadalur, which is located at around 12 kilometers from the airport, and 53 kilometers from the capital Torshavn. The Gasadalur village sits on the islands of Vagar and is surrounded by pure nature, greenery and mountain cliffs. This stunning little gem is something you will probably only be able to experience once in your lifetime. It’s one of those places, which looks as if it's been photoshopped in a travel magazine. Because of Gasadalur’s remote location, its population can be counted on fingers; it has around 10 to 15 inhabitants. When in Gasadalur, make sure you visit the Mulafossur waterfall. 

Drangarnir - the Sea Stacks

From Gasadalur head further south to Drangarnir, or the "Sea Stacks". Dranganir is basically a viewpoint of two sea stacks, that make it one of the must-visit sights on the Faroe Islands. In order to reach the Dranganir viewpoint, you will have to go on a little hike. For this excursion, you must get a tour guide, since you will be walking and crossing various lands, which require permission from the landowners. Be careful, you could face a fine if you venture out alone. You can sign up and find the tours which are organized, in the village of Sorvagur. The tour will take place provided there is good weather, and it will last around 5 hours, so prepare yourself accordingly. 

Lake Sorvagsvatn/Leitisvatn

On your way back, once you have passed Sorvagur, head further south, towards Lake Sorvagsvatn/Leitisvatn. This bed of water is the largest lake to be found on the Faroe Islands. The reason it should be on your bucket list is because of the optical illusion, which it creates. Once you are standing in front of it, it appears as if the ocean is coming over the lake. Quite a fascinating sight! If you have extra time, and you’d like to explore further, then you can follow the path along the lake. The path will take you to the Bosdalafossur waterfall. This walk is not very demanding and should take you around 45 minutes.
