Continuing my “Promoting Erasmus and studying abroad” pages, I now introduce you to the Delft University of Technology. Let’s suppose that you are an Erasmus student or in general a student planning to study abroad for a semester or so. What are the factors that you would take into consideration before choosing your next destination and university? How would you organise your background research? What are the things that you’d love to know about your university in advance? Here’s a short research I did about one of the biggest universities in the Netherlands that welcomes thousands of Erasmus students every year.
Delft University of Technology also known as TU Delft, is the largest and oldest Dutch public technological university, located in Delft, Netherlands. It counts as one of the best universities for engineering and technology worldwide, typically seen within the top 20. It is repeatedly considered the best university of technology in the Netherlands. TU Delft is a university with a leading global reputation. The TU Delft is actively engaged in partnering with peer universities, research institutions and government agencies across the globe in order to facilitate a wide variety of intellectual interactions and exchanges.Their campus offers you the two things most important for a successful education: adequate study facilities and room to relax. TU Delft has computer labs, group study spaces, coffee corners, faculty bars, sports facilities, culture, and much more.
Delft has a reputation for being a friendly city; bars and terraces along the canals and on the city squares, quirky shops, affordable restaurants and great cinemas. It is easy to find your way around as everything is close together. Delft is bursting with activity from spring right through to autumn, including music festivals and street theatre. When it comes to culture, Delft has something for everyone. Have a look at the activities that follow!
1) Learn some of the language. Of course, most Dutch people can speak English fluently but showing that you are at least trying to speak their language will go a long way. 2) Get a bike. It’s just a MUST. You can’t adjust into the Dutch culture without a bike! 3) Visit more places than just Delft. The Netherlands has lots to offer. It’s not all just coffee shops and red light districts. 4) Be careful crossing the street. Well, that goes for every country right? 5) Enjoy your time abroad!
TU Delft collaborates with various housing agencies in the greater Delft region to offer incoming international students help in finding accommodation. Both self-contained as shared-facilities units are offered. All accommodations on offer are within a 30-minute distance from campus, by bike and/or public transport. They are furnished and meet a minimum quality standard set by TU Delft.
You may find the following list useful when looking for accommodation. It consists of real-estate agents, rental agencies and listing sites that also cater to students. TU Delft does not have any affiliation with these housing organisations.
Average rental in shared accommodation; 400 euros. Monthly food cost; 226 euros. Average lunch price at a restaurant; 15 euros. Average Fitness subscription; 23 euros. Beer Price at a bar; 4 euros.
ESN works in the interest of all international students, not just for Erasmus students. ESN offers a clear introductory programme for all international students to introduce them to the laws, rules and customs of their host country.
