These days there is a big ongoing event followed by millions of people from all over the world- eight word chess champion candidates are competing in Berlin. The winner will get an opportunity to win the title of World Chess Champion competing with the current world chess champion Magnus Carlsen in November 2018. One of those grandmasters is Armenian Levon Aronyan. Taking this into consideration I have decided to tell you about chess in Armenia.

Even if Armenia with its territory and population is not among the biggest countries in the world, those who are more or less interested in this game/sport, most probably have heard about achievements of Armenians in chess. In recent years the national chess team of Armenia once became a world champion and three times an Olympic champion.

Chess is a game/sport but to some extent, it’s also a science. People like and play this game discovering its new and hidden sides. It’s a game for great minds. It teaches people the art of logical thinking and accurate calculation. Considering that chess has positive effect on the development of children and is a great tool to improve mathematical skills , Armenia became the first country to include chess as a compulsory subject at public schools to publicize the game throughout Armenia. This decision was much welcomed by the public. The President of Armenia who is also the President of the Chess Federation of Armenia contributes a lot Armenians to have all the facilities to develop their skills and competencies in chess.

The first Chess scientific-research Institute was opened in Armenia in 2017. The Chess House after Tigran Petrosyan (Armenian Grandmaster, and Double World Chess Champion from 1963 to 1969) is an exciting place for tourists to stop by and to test their chess skills competing with the students of the Chess House. The facade of the building is decorated with chess pieces The Chess Academy of Armenia is another leading chess-teaching institution where many international tournaments take place (if you are into chess you may wish to check the opportunities on how to participate in those tournaments). Another institution that is specialized in Chess development is the Olympic chess school after Henrikh Gasparyan that operates whiten the ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs. The school is located by the Chess House after Tigran Petrosyan.
