A day trip reserved for skiing near Vienna

If you live in Austria, a land with more than 2500 kilometres of ski lifts and 7000 kilometres of prepared ski slopes, you probably know how to ski. Even its capital, Vienna, located in rather flat terrain, offers a possibility to ski inside of the city limits. Around Vienna, in the federal state of Lower Austria, there are numerous ski areas that are suitable for a day trip from the city. In this article made for all visitors of the Austrian capital city, I will present you two smaller but beautiful and well-equipped ski areas near Vienna, where you can spend a day reserved only for skiing.

Unterberg

Unterberg is a small ski area located 70 km (less than an hour drive) from Vienna. It has 12 well-groomed ski slopes that are around 16 kilometres long. The slopes are blue, easy and red for the intermediate skiers. The ski area is located on a 1342-meter-high peak. From the highest point where the top station of ski lift is located, six different routes lead you to the valley. Five kilometres long run leads directly to the parking lot, which is very convenient. A double Olympic champion, Michaela Dorfmeister, made her first skiing attempts here, and one FIS-standard slope is named after her. This ski area is equipped with four ski lifts and a magic carpet for those who make first attempts on skis. For those who already have skills and love to freestyle, there is a fun park.  

Annaberg

Annaberg is a perfect family ski area located around 100 km from the capital city. It is one of the oldest and best-organized ski regions in the federal state of Lower Austria. This resort offers 13 kilometres of slopes, with all three difficulty levels: blue, red and black. The black FIS downhill slope is the highlight for the expert skiers. Annaberg is very interesting for free-stylers because it offers two freestyle areas. The "Anna Park Family" is a fun park, that perfect for the first freestyle attempts. It has been adapted to small freestylers and anyone who wants to dare his first slides and jumps. At a length of 800 metres, the "Anna-Park Fun Cross" provides an action with steep turns, snow waves and jumps - or as the experts say - with "banked turns", "waves" and "kickers".  It is divided into two difficulty level slopes - an "Easyline" and a "Sportline". The latter is also used for cross-country and snowboard cross-races.

At the highest point of the ski area, a traditional mountain restaurant Anna-Alm, with a sun terrace, offers refreshment and mountain food for skiers.
