History

The village Tsinandali was a homeland of the family of Chavchavadzes for several centuries. This surname exists in Kakheti from the 18th century. Tsinandali is also famous because of Garsevan Chavchavadze, an ambassador of Georgia to Russia, who was living there. He played a huge role in the relationships between Russia and Georgia. Garsevan Chavchavadze was the one who signed the Treaty of Georgievsk in 1783. After this, King Erekle handed over him a large area of land with a house, and later on, this heritage was given to Alexander Chavchavadze

Alexander Chavchavadze

Alexander Chavchavadze was born in Saint Petersburg, and he grew up at the imperial door. In 1831, he built a big palace in Tsinandali, that was surrounded by a beautiful green garden. The Palace of Tsinandali was a cultural hub in the 19th century. Alexander Chavchavadze was the first who used the European technologies in the wine-making process. He produced the first bottle of wine with the European technology in Tsinandali. By 1886, the palace of Chavchavadzes became the summer residence of Romanovs. The House Museum of Alexander Chavchavadze was opened in 1946. It was reconstructed several times and became more attractive for the visitors. You can see many interesting things in the museum, including the private things of Alexander, musical instruments and different kinds of manuscripts.

A beautiful garden and the winery in Tsinandali

The garden holds 18 hectares, and it is cultivated around the House Museum. This garden is unique not only because of the exotic plants but also for its wild nature. You will also see an interesting maze there and beautiful views that will make you feel relaxed. The garden of Tsinandali is different from the European parks because of its free planning, which means that it looks more natural and wilder.

The winery was built by Alexander Chavchavadze in the 19th century. He collected unique European wines and the ones that were produced by himself. The winery is unique as there is a special climate and humidity that is the best for keeping the wine for a long time. Nowadays, the collection of the winery counts around 16,500 bottles.
