As I have already mentioned, Valencian people have a strong culture and deep traditions that also concern their* *food and drinks. Undoubtedly, its most famous dish is Paella, and there are a ton of restaurants in the city where you can enjoy this delicious plate in its different forms. However, I am going to tell you about its most popular drink, where it comes from, and the best place to drink it - this drink is consumed as much as Paella **by the local people!

Have you ever heard of Horchata de chufa?

Horchata is a refreshing, milky drink made of chufas, which are tiger nuts in English, plenty of water and sugar. Local people drink horchata **throughout the entire year, and they usually have it with fartons, a sweet kind of pastry that goes perfectly well with the horchata; it is perfect for dipping into the milky drink! Ho[rchata de chufa](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/refresh-in-santa-catalina-horchateria-adg0) is very popular in Spain, though its most popular production center is in Valencia.

It is ice-cold served as natural refreshment for the warm weather, and it is actually quite a healthy drink since it has some benefits for your health. It lowers cholesterol, decreases bloating, and helps with digestion. This beverage doesn’t have caffeine or other stimulants, making it suitable for kids and gluten intolerant people, who can drink horchata de chufa too as it’s gluten-free.

The tiger nuts (chufas) used to make horchata originally come from Egypt, but nowadays people grow them in Alboraya, a town located 3 km away from Valencia City. Horchata de chufa is Alboraya’s specialty - thanks to the Mediterranean climate, the state of the soils and the water, Alboraya is the perfect place to grow chufa, as well as other plants and vegetables.

Best Horchata in Alboraya - Horchateria Daniel

So as you can imagine, the best horchata shops are in Alboraya, in a street named after the drink. Horchatería Daniel is probably the "horchata temple of Alboraya." It is one of the most emblematic horchata shops in the city, offering 100% natural and artisanal horchata and authentic fartons since 1949. You will be able to try the same horchata that Salvador Dalí or Rafael Alberti tried back in time and that many celebrities enjoy today.

I had to opportunity to be there a couple of weeks ago as I like horchata more and more every day, and I absolutely loved the place and their products. It is a classic place with a beautiful terrace, a very good service and normal prices. Horcahtería Daniel also serve ice-horchata and ice cream-horchata, which you should definitely try. My favourite horchateria in Valencia for sure!
