Mtatsminda Park – enjoy a funicular ride to the hill

The funicular project

As you know, a funicular is a ropeway, the purpose of which is to carry passengers on a steep slope. At the beginning of the 20th century, there was an idea of expanding the city by populating the upper parts of T**bi[lisi.](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/tbilisi-a-capital-of-legends-tel8) However, the transport communication between the upper part of the town and the lower part of Tbilisi was a huge problem. The solution to this problem was presented by the owner of Tbilisi’s Tram, a Belgian company. The author of this project* was a respectful engineer, Alfonse Robbie*.

The project was about connecting the upper and lower parts of the city by the f**unicular. The Tbilisi** City Hall approved this idea, so constructions started in 1903 and finished in 1905. For the first 45 years, the funicular belonged to this Belgian company, and later on, it was given to the City Hall free of charge.

Tbilisi's highest park

Mtatsminda Park was built around the upper station of the funicular in 1930. It is the highest park in Tbilisi. A 210 meters tall TV tower is also located in this park, which might be seen from almost all parts of Tbilisi. You can consider it as The Eiffel Tower of Tbilisi.

You can reach the park by car, bus or funicular. I advise you to go there by the funicular as it is a lovely and exciting experience for all travelers. The upper station of the funicular used to be a 2-floor building called “Rotonda.” Except for the station, there were café-bars and restaurants in this building. However, in between 1936-38, they reconstructed this place and added the third floor. Nowadays, this building looks very nice from every point of Tbilisi and stands near the TV tower. There you can find the “Funicular Restaurant” which successfully serves many clients every day.

As I have already mentioned, the park is one of the most favorite places not only for Georgians but also for our visitors. From the park, you can see the best views of Tbilisi. This place is unique with its location and interesting infrastructure.
