Maastricht: Netherlands' Oldest

Maastricht, located in the south of the Netherlands, is very close to both Belgium and Germany (you can cycle or basically walk). The city stands along the Maas river and if you like old buildings, churches, fine cuisine and shopping, you will be obsessed with Maastricht. This small and cute city attracts both students with its Maastricht University and tourists with its magnificent old town which is one of the oldest in the Netherlands. You can reach the city from its small airport from Europe, but you can also fly to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and then take a 3-hour train ride. The bus and the train options are also available. To travel inside the city, you can walk around to get to see the lovely architecture of the streets, the canals, and the bridges, but of course, you can take a bus or cycle too.

You can start exploring the city from its city center, which is one of the most picturesque stops in Maastricht, admire the old buildings and old cathedrals. The city center is called "The Vrijthof" and it hosts very large festivals each year. You can also take a boat tour from the city center and see the landmarks of the city.

Another most attractive landmark of the city is the St.Servaasburg bridge. This limestone footbridge across the Meuse river is the oldest bridge in the Netherlands. St.Servaasburg bridge was built in AD 50 by the Romans. During the World War II, the bridge was damaged by the German army, that's why it was rebuilt in 1948.

Saint Pietersberg Caves are also another important tourist attractions in Maastricht. This marlstone mines was used as shelter during the bombing and have more than 20,000 passages! You can take English tours for the caves and the fortresses.

If you like contemporary art and also Old Master's work, you have to check out the Bonnefantenmuseum! You can get to see 16th and 17th Century Flemish artworks, amazing medieval sculptures, Italian paintings and of course contemporary art collections of a various group of artists. The entry is 7,50 Euro for adults, and 3,50 Euro for children between 13 and 18 years old.

If you enjoy silence and green, you have to check out the City Park. This park contains old city wall set, various of birds and water benches. You can also have a lovely picnic with your friends or with your family!
