Hangar-7, a unique hangar in the world

Normally, you wouldn’t expect anything else from the aircraft hangar then to look like a big metal or concrete shoebox, with the sole role to protect an aircraft from the outside factors. However, people from Salzburg have done it differently and made the Hangar-7 an architectural masterpiece and a unique hangar in the world. This structure where flying is worshipped is a one-of-a-kind building located at the Salzburg Airport, where everything is about the speed being it on land or in the air.

Architectural value

The central part of the building is a unique glass dome, while the entrance consists of two cylindrical towers, and the entire structure is wing-shaped. These towers provide a space for the offices and gastronomical highlights, which include two bars, the Lounge - Café, and an elegant Michelin-starred restaurant Ikarus. For this glass-steel structure, 1,200 tonnes of steel and 380 tonnes of special glass were used in the construction. Almost 2000 glass plates used for this building are all of different sizes. Their transparency provides a scenic view of the impressive mountain panorama. Furthermore, the architects succeeded in making all the cabling, heating and ventilation invisible.

Collection

The Hangar-7 is home to an old airplane fleet owned by the company Flying Bulls. A group of aviation enthusiasts with an enormous passion for rare historical aeroplanes have collected some of the most beautiful and exceptional old airplanes in the world. They have everything from the luxury airliner to combat planes and helicopters. There you can see the Douglas DC-6B airliner, which was in service of ex-Yugoslav president Marshal Josip Broz Tito and Zambia’s president Kenneth Kaund, and served as the luxury airliner for them and their VIP guests. Also the demilitarised Dornier Alpha Jets used in many spectacular aerobatics air shows can be seen here, as well as demilitarised attack Helicopter Cobra, one of the most known combat helicopters in the world, which gained its popularity during the Vietnam Wars. How would this collection look like without possibly the most beautiful aeroplane ever built the P-38 Lightning by Lockheed. This beauty has found its place in the Hangar-7. Besides these aircrafts, Flying Bulls possess various types of aircrafts from those used in World War II, through the bomber B-25 to modern steel birds and lot more. Besides the old fleet of airplanes, the Hangar-7 is home to a collection of Formula One racing cars. This is understandable because the owner of the hangar, as well as the Flying Bulls company is an Austrian businessman, billionaire, aircraft enthusiast and speed junky Dietrich Mateschitz, the owner of Red Bull brand. Red Bull is also the owner of two Formula One teams - Red Bull Racing – RBR and Red Bull Toro Rosso, that functions as a junior team to RBR, with the aim of developing the skills of promising drivers for the senior team. RBR is a very successful team that won four successive Constructors' Championship titles, in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013, becoming the first Austrian licensed team to win the title.

The Hangar-7 at the Salzburg Airport is a unique hangar in the world which houses the old Flying Bulls aircraft fleet and a collection of Formula 1 race cars. It also offers a space for the art exhibitions. And with its Restaurant Ikarus, two bars, an Outdoor Lounge and one café, it is not just an events location, but a meeting point for art lovers and bons vivants, too.
