Have you ever heard about the BBC and Netflix TV series called Dracula? It retells the classic story of Dr[acula](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/how-to-detect-dracula-in-transylvania-part-1-pxyf), or so-called Vlad the Impaler, one of the most important rulers in the Wallachian history. Well, in case you are wondering - yes, Wallachia is in Romania, and it has nothing to do with Slovakia and Slovak history, but the BBC and Netflix series Dracula was filmed here! Let's take a look at Slovakia´s filming locations.

What is interesting?

Dracula is the name of the new TV series, and it is a cooperation of two big “players” Netflix and BBC. It is written by the same producers that worked together on the TV series Sherlock and Doctor Who, Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat. The main characters are also remarkable; for example, you have a chance to see one of the best Danish actors playing Dracula. So, you can expect nothing less than a great show. The inspiration for the series is the well-known horror novel from the 19th century of the same name by Bram Stoker. In the story, Dracula attempts to move from Transylvania to England in order to find fresh blood.

Banská Štiavnica

One of the filming locations takes place in the beautiful medieval city of Banská Štiavnica. It is listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site, and it should definitely be on your must-see list for traveling across Slovakia. It is worth visiting anyway, but now with the TV series Dracula, it might be even more enjoyable! The main Dracula´s castle is actually Starý Zámok, a city castle of Banská Štiavnica. It is a castle from the 15th century that now serves as the Slovak Mining Museum.  However,* the historical downtown of Banská Štiavnica** is shown in the series* as well.

Other filming locations

Besides Banská Štiavnica, Oravský Hrad, one of the most beautiful castles in Slovakia built in the 13th century, is also displayed. It is situated on a high rock above the river, so it provides breathtaking sceneries. This castle was also used in the Nosferatu movie, another adaptation of Dracula. The village of Zuberec, near the area of the mentioned castle, is shown in the BBC and Netflix series as well. It is quite popular among tourists because of its picturesque streets. The rest of the TV series is filmed in the world-famous Bray Studios in England.
