Corfu's Old Town is a remarkable UNESCO-listed monument that shouldn't be missed. With its roots dating back to the 8th century BC, the Old Town is situated in a strategic position at the entrance of the Adriatic Sea. It served as a crucial trading post and was defended by three forts designed by renowned Venetian engineers against the Ottoman Empire. Over time, the forts were repaired and rebuilt several times, more recently under British rule in the 19th century.

The Old Town's neoclassical architecture, some of which dates back to the Venetian period, is a testament to its rich history. As a fortified Mediterranean port, Corfu's urban and port ensemble stands out for its high level of integrity and authenticity. Here are some must-visit spots in the Old Town.

Spianada Square: The Heart of the Old Town

Spianada Square, the biggest square in Greece, is a hub of activity in the Old Town. You'll find some of Corfu's most significant sites, including the Palace of St. Michael and St. George, the Maitland Rotunda, and the Liston Promenade. If you're lucky, you'll catch a concert at the kiosk, which is used as a stage throughout the year. At Spianada Square, you'll also come across the Cricket Court of Corfu, which was created during the time Corfu was under English occupation.

Stroll Along Liston Promenade

Liston Promenade, located on the western side of Spianada Square, is a popular spot for both locals and tourists. Elegant coffee places line the promenade, making it an excellent place to sit, relax, and soak in the atmosphere. During Greek Easter, Liston is bustling with traditional Corfiot customs and festivities.

Achillion Palace: A Fairytale Come to Life

Achillion Palace, the former residence of Empress Sissy, is another must-visit spot. The palace was built in 1890 to help the empress recover in Corfu during a period when her health was weak. The palace took its name from Sissy's favourite ancient Greek hero, Achilles. The interior of the palace is filled with impressive exhibits, including statues, paintings, and Sissy's furniture. The palace is surrounded by a magnificent garden with exotic plants, palm trees, fountains, and flowers. The garden also provides a breathtaking view of Corfu town.
