Côte d’Emeraude - the most impressive Brittany coastline

Brittany, the northwest French region, is a place famous for its gourmand French gastronomy, nice and kind locals, but also for its incredible coast that you can explore by hiking, biking or by a car. The emerald green coast, The Côte d’Emeraude is probably the most impressive Brittany coastline located between Cancale and Cap Fréhel. For a weekend or even a week, this destination is perfect for the sea and outdoors lovers.

From Saint-Malo to Dinard

The Côte d’Emeraude (the Emerald Coast), is a name invented in 1890 by Eugène Herpin, a French historian, who was impressed by the color of the see of this north-east part of the Brittany coast. Brittany's beautiful Emerald Coast is definitely a part of France that you need to put on your bucket list. I recommend you to start your travel from Saint-Malo. This historical, walled port city in Brittany, also known as a home of corsair, offers an incredible view of the beaches and neighboring islands from its ramparts. Your next stop should be the Rance tidal power station, opened in 1966 as the world's first tidal power station and the only one of this kind outside the former USSR, which harnesses the energy of the rising and falling tides. At the end of the day, you should go at the beautiful beach in Dinard, a seaside resort know for its splendid villas, and admire the sunset with the glass of a cold Brittany's cider from the terrace of a fotel and restaurant “Hotel de la Valée”.

From the Fort La Latte to Cape Fréhel

The next morning, start your journey following the coast road to the west. You will arrive at the Fort La Latte. This is one of the most impressive places on the Emerald Coast. Overlooking a cliff of 72 meters, a castle built on a small piece of land in the 13th century, is more than impressive. The castle has been classified as a historical monument in 1925. Various films have been shot here, like the Vikings (1958) with Kirk Douglas in the leading role. And nature is more than magnificent! The coast is slowly becoming pink. We are approaching the next Brittany coast - The Côte de Granit rose or Pink Granite Coast. But for now, let us just stop here. Our last stop on this journey is the Cape Frehel. On this peninsula, there are no towns or villages. Only two lighthouses, one from the 17th century and the other one from 1950, are located on the top of it. Our journey ends in the most romantic place. The wind is omnipresent, the waves break on the rocks, the air is fresh, and we are enjoying the extraordinary view of the Côte d’Emeraude - the most impressive Brittany coastline.
