Cave spas of Matera – luxury getaway in a unique environment

Matera used to be called “the shame of Italy.” No electricity supply, no hot running water, caves instead of houses – it was the symbol of backwardness and underdevelopment in South Italy. The poor living conditions were described by the famous writer Carlo Levi and attracted many other journalists and writers to the town of Matera.

The historical center of Matera began to change for the better in 1986. The “Sassi” were given without rental payment for people who could afford to renew and to reconstruct them for commercial use.

Nowadays, Matera is probably one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region. It was the European capital of culture in 2019, served as filming set for the Passions of Christ, James Bond, and has a steadily increasing number of visitors from all over the world.

Many of the former cave houses are B&B’s, restaurants, bars, and small shops often full of handcrafted goods. The authentic and historical flair is spread all over the town and makes you feel like set back in time. But some places decided to turn the stone caves into luxury getaways. The simplicity of those ancient houses paired with minimalistic elegance and modern comfort guarantee an unforgettable stay.

While many facilities combine the historic charm with modern luxury, one of the most spectacular ones is the Aquatio Cave Luxury Hotel & Spa. It is conveniently located directly in the historical center of Matera. The rooms are built in the ancient cave stone structures and combined with a clean furniture style and moody lighting. The highlight of the Hotel is the spa area that offers a unique pool area tucked away in sandstone. Floating and swimming in this dreamy environment is undoubtedly a true “bucket-list” moment.

Matera is definitely one of the highlights of Basilicata, but if you rent a car, it is also a good starting point to explore other regions of southern Italy, like Campania or Apulia

Whether you just want to treat yourself, explore the vivid history of Matera, or plan a romantic getaway – floating in an illuminated pool tucked away in these ancient stones, is a magical experience you will always remember.
