The Zaghouan Aqueduct is also called the Aqueduct of Carthage, since it was built to deliver water to the ancient city. The ancient Roman aqueduct was one of the longest from across the Roman Empire at 132 kilometers. It was built in the first half of the 2nd century BCE. It was the target of destruction many times for people hoping to cut off the water supply to Carthage. In the mid-1800s, the aqueduct was repaired with some modern piping in order to supply the Tunis area with water. It remains in use today. Picture © Credits to istock/alantobey
