
A public institution founded in 1983, the Tunisian National Theater's mission is the development of Tunisian theater through training, production and distribution. It enjoys financial autonomy under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture. The Tunisian National Theater has two spaces to know: "The theater palace" in the district of Halfaouine, the Medina of Tunis and the "4th art" avenue of Paris in downtown Tunis.
The theater palace is the headquarters of the Tunisian National Theater. This is the palace of Mustapha Khaznadar, Minister of Finance and Grand Vizier Bey in the 19th century. This monument is located in Halfaouine square, district of the medina of Tunis which was a real theater of the popular arts at the beginning of the 20th century. In addition to the administration of the Tunisian National Theater, the theater palace has several rehearsal rooms including the large hall built in the garden of the palace in 1994 which can accommodate performances of theater, dance or circus ... There is also a a theater and live arts library, as well as a sewing workshop, a carpentry workshop and an ironwork workshop for the creation of costumes, sets and accessories. It is dedicated to the creation, where the works of the national theater are produced, to the training also and to the research on the development of the theater.
Under the direction of Fadhel Jaïbi, were created the school of the actor, the school of the author and that of the director. These three courses offer in-depth professional education in the form of practical workshops and theoretical seminars. She confronts students with the reality of theater in order to prepare them to acquire the profession before practicing the profession. The goal is to contribute to the qualitative evolution of Tunisian theater and to make it more present in the international market. In addition, the Tunisian National Theater has signed partnership agreements on training with the Ecole Nationale Superieure d'Art et Techniques du Theater or "Ecole de la Rue Blanche" in Lyon and with the Ecole Superieure d'Audiovisuel and Gammarth Cinema. Fadhel Jaïbi, director of the Tunisian National Theater proposes to found a permanent troupe "The Young National Theater" which integrates young actors admitted at the end of their training at the school of the actor with graduates of specialized higher institutions. This troupe will create and broadcast 4 productions over a period of 2 years under the direction of confirmed directors. At the end of this period, they will have acquired the necessary profession for their artistic career.
The "4th art", formerly "Cinema Paris" was restored and equipped by the Tunisian National Theater in 1993. It had a second renovation of the scene and backstage at the end of 2014. This theater in black box at the Italian welcomes contemporary live arts performances in front of 370 spectators. The Tunisian National Theater is working to train a theater and dance public by mobilizing young people, students and all social categories. It also distributes theatrical and choreographic works in all four corners of Tunisia in collaboration with drama centers as well as abroad so that the Tunisian theater has the radiation it deserves.
