In 1968 the enthusiastic theater friend Norman Elrod founded the association "Theater an der Grenze" with the intention to realize professional theater performances. It had been hoped a big audience march, not least by students of the newly founded University of Konstanz. The revenue, however, fell far short of expectations. In 1971, the theater was then converted into a guest performance company, organized by Thomas Onken. After Thomas Onken Dieter Glaus (1974/1981), Toni Brunner (1981/2000), Dorena Raggenbass (2000/2007), Seraina Perini (2007/2011 Co-Presidium), Micky Altdorf (2007/2012), Flavia Mösli (2007/2012) 2009/2013) and since September 2013 Fritz Brechbühl the association presidency and the management of the theater.

Initially, the theater was only supported by private benefactors. From the seventies, the town of Kreuzlingen made a small subsidy, which was later increased and finally increased by cantonal contributions. There will be 15 to 20 performances per year mainly from the fields of theater, cabaret, music and literature. The theater has 99 seats.
