Discover the Fascinating World of Fishing at Museo della pesca in Caslano

Nestled in the charming town of Caslano, in the Canton Ticino region of Switzerland, lies a hidden gem for fishing enthusiasts and history buffs alike - the Museo della pesca, or the Fishing Museum. This unique museum offers visitors a captivating journey into the traditions, techniques, and cultural significance of fishing in the region.

A Brief History

The Fishing Museum was established in 1993, thanks to the dedication of Franco Church and the collaboration of Pietro Colombo and Pier Carlo Parini. Initially focused on documenting fishing traditions and techniques, the museum has since expanded its scope to explore the relationship between man and nature, the exploitation of aquatic environments, and the impact of fishing on material culture.

Architectural Marvel

In 2010, the museum moved to its current location, a beautifully designed building by architect Alfio Indemini, just a few meters away from the picturesque shores of Lake Lugano. The new premises offer functional and open spaces, furnished with renewed exhibition criteria. With an increase in surface area from 360 m2 to 680 m2, the museum now boasts a multimedia room, temporary exhibition spaces, and a large room on the first floor that houses a fully equipped fishing boat, serving as the visual centerpiece of the exhibition.

Explore the Exhibits

As you wander through the museum, you'll embark on a thematic journey that delves into the world of fish, their environment, and traditional fishing techniques. The exhibits showcase a wide range of topics, including sport fishing, fly fishing for eels, and fish ponds on the river Tresa. One of the highlights is the attention given to young visitors, with a special educational area where they can experimentally deepen their knowledge of the fish environment.
