The goal of the museum is to provide general knowledge of the Earth's geological structure and processes. In this way we can better understand the prerequisites for all life on Earth. The museum wants to show how dependent we are on the geological material. The collections show the geology of Tunabygden and Dalarna, but there are also interesting material from other parts of Sweden and the host.
The collections contain more than 5000 exhibited stuffer and about 15,000 in stores. The museum is thus one of the largest association owned in Sweden. The age of the exhibited items varies. They are formed from more than 2000 million years back and up to our days. Most items are mineral substances.
In the museum you will find common, unusual, beautiful, colorful, fluorescent and / or radioactive minerals. We have a large collection of both cut and unleashed gemstones. They are especially hard and beautiful minerals. There is also a department of fossils from different ages. On screens, different geological phenomena are explained. In the museum shop there are minerals, rocks, fossils, jewelry and literature for sale.
The collections are owned by Tunabyggden Geological Society, TGF, which also operates the museum. The beautiful museum building is owned by Borlänge municipality.
During the summer, gold washing, stone grinding and mineral act for children are arranged. Every year, Geological Day is celebrated in early September with open houses and various activities.
The museum is surrounded by Stenparken and Lekparken, which displays geological materials, structures and processes. The parks invite you to relaxation and play for children and adults.
