**This square is the heart and soul of Slovenia’s second largest city, Maribor. **

Glavni Trg, or the Main Square of Maribor is the second largest square in the city, and is home to a lot of the hustle and bustle and pedestrian traffic of Maribor. The first mention of this historic square was in the 12th century, so it has been important to the city of Maribor for centuries now. Magnificent and colourful architecture characterise the square, and many significant buildings of the city call the square their home. The Maribor Town Hall is one of the most impressive and important buildings in the square, residing in a building that dates back to the 1500s.

In the centre of the square, you’ll see the Plague Column, which was a memorial dedicated to the victims of the plague. The memorial was built by plague survivors themselves during the 17th century, paying respects to the lost loved ones of the city.

Nowadays, the historic square is a place of social gathering. You can sit outside at one of the cafes and restaurants, admiring the views and people watching.
