Ah, a true treasure of Slovenia - Lake Bled. Does this lake need any introduction? Most likely, if you’ve seen photos of the country, you’ve come across images of how pristine and dreamlike this huge lake is.

Surrounded by high alpine peaks on all sides (depending on the year they’re gorgeously snow-capped) along with a stoic tear-shaped island with a church in the middle of the lake - Lake Bled knows how to make an impression.

As Slovenia’s premiere lake, there are plenty of things to do for locals and travellers. It’s a wonderful swimming spot, where the banks of the lake make for a great dive into the fresh waters. You can also kayak, canoe or take a traditional Pletna boat (a wooden flat-bottom row that’s inspired by a Venitian gondola) that shepherds you back and forth to the little eye-catching island in the middle of Lake Bled.

On that island is the picturesque Church of the Assumption, with the legendary bell of wishes. You can walk up the tall stone steps (99 steps to be exact!) and explore the gothic church. Inside, it’s adorned with Medieval frescos and really gilded Baroque relics harking back to 1655, when the Church of the Assumption was built. Now don’t forget to ring the bell! Local’s lore has it that when you make a wish while ringing the bell (which can be heard echoing throughout the lake), your wish will come true.
