** This stone church is thought to date back to anywhere from the 12th - 15th century, located in the southwest village of Hrastovlje. **
This church is an architectural gem located in the small village of Hrastovlje. There are a few different theories about the church’s unknown origin, but most historians suspect that the church was either built in the 12th or 15th century. The simple church is built behind a defensive wall that was used to protect Slovenia from attacks from the Ottoman empire, and is mostly made out of stone, a typical characteristic of the region of Slovenia.
The church is also well known for its well-preserved, beautiful frescoes that were painted in the 15th century by Johannes de Castua depicting scenes from the Bible and the lives of saints. These frescoes are widely considered some of the most impressive examples of Gothic architecture in all of Slovenia.
