Assumption of Maria Church

Located on Bled Island, quite literally in the middle of the lake, sits one of the most geographically interesting churches in Europe.

One thing that makes Lake Bled so distinctive is Bled Island, housing the Assumption of Maria Church in the middle of the lake, accessible by paddleboarding, row boats, and pletna boats which hold up to 20 people for a fee.

Nicknamed ‘Our Lady on the Lake’, this church is accessible by 99 wooden stairs. A cute tradition at this staircase is when a wedding takes place, the groom must carry his wife up these 99 steps after the ceremony to ensure a happy marriage! If you’re lucky you may even get to see this happen.

The church’s interior design is humble yet beautiful. Make sure to see the altar, the most breathtaking part of the church besides its picturesque exterior view.
