Novi Sad

Serbia numbers around 7 million residents. Its capital, Belgrade, ranks among the oldest and largest cities in Southeastern Europe. The Pannonian Plain covers the northern third of the country (Vojvodina and Mačva) while the easternmost tip of Serbia extends into the Wallachian Plain. Serbia's many sights include stunning castles, Medieval monasteries, lovely traditional villages and bustling cities with baroque parks and art-deco architecture. Largest national park in the country is Đerdap in the eastern part of the country, on the border with Romania. It consists of the Djerdap gorge thru which the river Danube runs and its beautiful surroundings of almost untouched nature.

Serbia

The region is so in the middle of all the european culture, so you will find churches, mosques and synagogues. The region also has many castles and old forteresses that are waiting to be explored. If you want to see the nature you have to go to Fruska Gora a huge natural park at the south of Novi Sad. Also it possesses a dozen of monasteries of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Combining the European Baroque with the Byzantine traditions of the Balkans, these churches have a cultural importance as a bridge between the Southern and the Northern Serbs.

Vojvodina

The Raid Victims Memorial was built in remembrance of the ’January Raid’ carried out from January 21st to January 23rd 1942 in Novi Sad. During these three days Hungarian fascists executed over a thousand people – Serbs, Jews and Gypsies. In 1971 at this place by the Danube river a 4 m tall bronze monument called ’The Family’ was put up. The author of the monument is a famous sculptor Jovan Soldatovic. In 1992 the same author created 78 bronze plates which were added to the memorial. Four of the plates tell the story of this tragical event in Serbian and Hebrew, and the other 66 plates hold the names of the victims. The memorial is designated as cultural heritage site of great importance.
