Andreevsky Monastery in Plennitsy, Moscow

Andreevsky Monastery is located on the bank of the Moscow River near the Vorobyovy Hills. It existed since the 13th century as the Hermitage of Transfiguration. St. Andrey Stratelates' Church, from which the monastery got its name, was built in 1591 in gratitude of Moscow's salvation from Khan Ğazı II Geray of Crimea. In the 17th century, Boyar Feodor Rtishchev invited here the most educated monks from different monasteries and founded an academic fellowship. The monk translated books and taught philosophy, rhetorics and Slavonic grammar. Nowadays, there are three churches in the monastery: St. Andrey Stratelates' Church, Church in the Name of Christ's Resurrection and the Bell Tower incorporating St. John the Theologian's Church.
