Founded in 1232, the Convento São Francisco was initially located in the Rocio area of Leiria. However, due to frequent flooding from the Lis River, it was relocated to its current site with the approval of King João I. The convent belonged to the custody of Lisbon, but after the dissolution of religious orders, it fell into disrepair. Instead of being demolished, the convent was repurposed as a town hall, court, and prison. However, this plan was eventually abandoned, and the current Leiria Town Hall was constructed elsewhere.

In 1861, the church was returned to the Franciscans, but a new church and convent, known as the Igreja e Convento da Portela, were commissioned in 1904. The Convento São Francisco was then leased to a milling company, which led to significant modifications to the convent's facade under the direction of architect Ernesto Korrodi.

While the church was closed in 1950 and fell into a state of disrepair, it underwent a restoration project in 1992. Led by architect João Roda, the restoration revealed rare and beautiful 15th-century frescoes that had been concealed for centuries.

The church's simple facade features a detailed Renaissance-style galilee, two windows, and a niche with the image of a saint. Inside, you'll find a single nave with wooden ceilings and 16th-century altars. Adjacent to the choir is the Chapel of the Third Order, built in 1719, which once connected to the convent.
