The Vasco da Gama Aquarium was built in the late 1890's , celebrating its namesakes voyages to India (four centuries ago at that time) and was one of the first aquariums in the world. Ever since its inception, it has celebrated portuguese marine exploration, including discoveries made by the them king, D. Carlos. But along the years, with the help of various restructurings and preservations, it has also changed focus to study, preserve and educate about marine biology, becoming a huge didactic institution. This divided the Aquarium in two entities, the Aquarium, to exhibit their tanks with diverse species, and the Museum, to exhibit the scientific findings of generations of marine investigators and explorers. And in the 2000's, the institution had many works done to enlarge its area, which concluded with an auditorium and a cafeteria with terrace, which connects directlyto the Aquarium, and a koi fish pond in the entrance.
