December 28, 1948, that is, more than half a century ago the founder and then director of "Arlekina" - Henryk Ryl - staged in the building at ul. Piotrkowska 151 children's show titled "Two Michał and the whole world" and so it all started. Ten years later, the theater, originally guest-starred, and since 1962 as the only tenant, moved into the occupied building at the junction of ul. Wólczanska and al. 1 May. The first director after 26 years transferred care to the "Harlequin" to his pupil - Stanislaw Ochmanski, who in turn, also himself, appointed himself a successor - currently managing the theater Waldemar Wolanski. From the very beginning, the "Arlekin" Theater aims to satisfy the most demanding little puppeteers. It does not cease to improve the old and search for new technical solutions and means of artistic expression. He cares for children to be well-known to fairy tales and at the same time strives to talk about the reality surrounding us. In the offer of the theater there are performances in traditional doll techniques, activities combining work with a doll with a game in the so-called. "live-action", puppet show, bunraku japanese theater performances, adult shows, educational programs, theater workshops, and the only one in Poland and one of the few in the world, young but already appreciated outside of our country - International Puppet Soloists Festival, which will be held in 2011. In the theater there is a Documentation Studio which gathers all information about Polish puppets. There is also the seat of the Polish branch of the International Association of Puppets UNIMA (www.polunima.art.pl) In over 60 years of existence, "Harlequin" has prepared 250 premieres - 31 thousand performances have seen nearly 11 million spectators.
