History of the Museum

The idea of creating a museum in Łuków was created after Poland regained its independence in 1918. The first museum project was made in 1920, when a group of bright city citizens came forward with a letter to the then City Council on organizing a museum. The building of the former church was proposed. The cost of adapting the church for museum purposes exceeded the financial capacity of the City Council and the initiative was lost. For the second time, the proposals of the museum were re-created by Stanislaw Samulik in "Gazeta Łukowska" in 1924. In 1925 in the same newspaper Jan Stanisław Majewski appealed to the inhabitants of Lukow "Museum! I would like to best describe the value of such a facility, but I will not be strong because I can not. It is really appreciated and understood only by those who truly love the Earth, their homeland, their nation, their life, their customs, their loved ones, their loved ones, everything that surrounds them from birth to death. To appreciate the value of a museum can only be one who wants to know every corner of the country, the product of human work, the wealth of the surrounding nature. "

The response to this article was the creation of the Temporary Committee of the Museum of the Land of Lukow, created by people with the whole heart of the devoted to this idea. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of this committee, the museum was unable to establish its presence. New proposals and efforts to set up a museum appeared in 1957, taken by the Society of Friends of the Land Lukow. As a result of persistent actions of the President of the Society, Dr. Ryszard Kaszubski and High School T. Kościuszko Janina Tryboń and the entire Board of the Society, the National Council in Łuków on May 28, 1959 adopted Resolution No. 5/59 on the development of culture and construction of schools social activities in the district of.

Paragraph 4 of this resolution reads: "To commission the Presidium of the District Council of the State of Poland to initiate preliminary work in the organization of the Regional Museum of the Land of Łukowska with the departments of nature, archeology, history and art" in November 1959. In November 1959 the representative of the Lubelskie Museum Janusz Optołowicz came to meet with the county authorities. The founding principles of the museum organization, legal status, and care and funding arrangements were established. On 3 December 1959, the Presidium of the District Council of the National Council adopted Resolution No. 225/59 as follows: "The PPRN Bureau decides:

§1

Organized on 1 January 1960 the Regional Museum under the name "Museum of the Land of Lukow", and in it the following sections: ethnographic, archeological, historical, art department, department of souvenirs H. Sienkiewicz.

§2

On the premises of the museum is to allocate the floor of the building of the current District Hospital at Świerczewskiego Street.

§19

By the time of transferring the hospital to the new buildings, put the museum in the place of replacement at the site of the new hospital. "

On June 2, the Museum Organizing Committee was established. The Presidium of the District Council of the National Commission has commissioned a working plan in consultation with the director of the Lublin Museum in Lublin.

From 1 July 1960, a staff member of the Longin Kowalczyk Museum was employed and assigned to work on the organization of the museum, collection of collections and contact with the director and staff of the Museum of Lublin.

The hospital's facilities did not come because the hospital had been located there in the meantime. As a result of the efforts of Irena Iskrzycka - conductor. The Museum of Lublin as well as the director of the Regional Museum Longina Kowalczyk, in 1964, allocated for the needs of the museum four rooms requiring serious repairs in the former Szaniawski Convent, after the seat of the District Court at 19 Piłsudskiego Street (then Świerczewskiego Street). After the renovation of the rooms on March 7, 1967, two expositions were opened in their own premises: "Weaving of the South Lublin Region" and "Struggle Fighting in the Land of Łukowska".

Previously, museum exhibitions were exhibited in the District Houses of Culture, and exhibits purchased in the area of the Ľubov district were collected in a wooden outhouse located on the estate of Mr Danuta from Lewoncewiczów Osypińska next to the main building of the present museum.

In 1965, the Presidium of the Provincial National Council adopted a resolution on the creation of the Museum of H. Sienkiewicz in Wola Okrzejska in the manor house where the great writer was born. This man was in a state of ruin. Thanks to the interest of the poviat authorities at that time, especially Roman Dajek, Head of the Department. A culture that has put a lot of effort and effort into rebuilding this facility. In the second half of 1966 the building was put into operation. Organization of the Museum of H. Sienkiewicz was entrusted to the Regional Museum in Łuków. On October 2, 1966, a grand opening was held. Until 1975 it was a branch of the Museum in Łuków.

In July 1960, the museum's content was taken up by the Lublin Museum, focusing on the search, collection and elaboration of exhibits in folk culture, history and photographic documentation of monuments. Since 1975 the scope of influence of the museum has been expanded in the area of ethnography to the area of Mazovia - Podlasie, ie the former province. Siedlce. The tools of flax processing, agricultural tools from the turn of the 19th century, sculpture, cut-out, professional and folk paintings, ammonites, historical exhibits and photographic documentation of immovable monuments.

After a long and thorough renovation of the building, begun in 1985, and completed in November 1998, the museum has 8 exhibition rooms and storage and administration rooms with a total area of 558 m2. A separate one-storied building of 132 m2 contains storage and utility rooms.

The overhaul of the building was conditional on the lack of funds. Repeated removals to replacement premises that did not match the storage conditions of the exhibits and financial shortcomings during the renovation of the building did not favor systematic replenishment of the collections. Exhibition activities during the renovation period continued beyond the museum's premises. Exhibitions were held at the premises of cultural centers, libraries, schools and museums in Siedlce and Biała Podlaska. Museum activity is defined by the statute, which sets out the tasks in detail. By extending the discussion of the statutory activity one should mention the Museum of Folk Sculpture, which was created by the Lukow Museum, whose activity dates back to 1965.

The rise of the Lukowski Folk Sculpture Center is a national phenomenon, because folk sculpture in this area is a completely new field of artistic activity without any prototypes, and its character was shaped only a dozen or so years after its inception.

The precursor of creative activity is Marian Adamski, who began sculpting under the influence of cousin Henryk Wierzchowski, a talented sculptor from the center of Sierpc. Following in the footsteps of M. Adamski began to sculpt his neighbors and cousins. The contests and exhibitions organized by the Museum were an incentive to practice this field of art. Characteristics of the sculpture of this center are: simplicity and lapidarness of the subject, freedom of expression, boldness of solutions and richness of color. Through competitions, exhibitions, folk art fairs, the glory of the aristocratic sculptors quickly began to cross the local and regional borders, and the leading deposits in regional and national competitions and awards: Young them. St. Wyspiański, Oskar Kolberg and diplomas of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage raised their artistic prestige.

The works of these sculptors are very popular among Polish and foreign collectors and they enrich the collections of many museums. Apart from regional and national exhibitions, sculptures by the authors of the Łukowski Sculpture Center were presented at exhibitions in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Canada, the United States and Russia.

While performing the program of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage "Deaths" there are two "sculpture nurseries" in Łuków and Wola Gułowska - run by experienced sculptors, members of the Association of Folk Creators.

Weaving is a field of folk art until recently still alive, today it is already in decline. Weaving was always associated with the household, dress, or decoration of the peasantry. On Łukowska Land there were all weaving techniques known in traditional folk weaving. Until 1995 there were textile centers in Jarczów and Goź, where a dozen weaving made mostly decorative fabrics, partly for personal use, but mainly for competitions and exhibitions. As a result of old age and poor health can not continue this field of creativity. Young women without motivation due to lack of market do not continue this difficult and demanding physical effort, time and patience of the art of weaving.

One of the forms of museum activity is to provide students writing theses, bachelors and master's theses on folk culture of Eastern Mazovia and South Podlasie as well as the history of Lukowska Land. Teachers and students of primary and post-secondary schools are also benefiting from consultations.

In 2009, the Regional Museum in Łuków carried out the task of "REGIONAL MUSEUM - CULTURE OF PEOPLE'S CULTURE OF THE LUKOWSKIEGO REGION" using a special purpose grant from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, as well as funds of the District Office in Łuków.

Within the framework of the task "making cobblestones, developing terrain around the building", the yard of the Museum was paved with cobblestones.

Above the aesthetic values, the functionality and scope of the Museum's activity are enhanced, by extending its offer to such activities as: organizing outdoor activities (cut-out, outdoor sculpture), workshops on dying (pottery, smithery), band concerts and folk groups, organizing various shows (former agricultural equipment, military equipment).

The cobblestones of the pavement can also be used to secure cars and coaches for the visitors. The museum's own parking lot will contribute to its development, taking into account the fact that it is located in the city center where there are problems parking, so far visiting trips By car parked at a great distance from the Museum, today they have the possibility to park directly in the Museum.

In November 2009, The Museum has established cooperation with the Institute of National Remembrance, thanks to which the Museum will organize exhibitions prepared by the Public Education Office of the Institute of National Remembrance and a popular science conference devoted to the events of our region based on the documents contained in the archives of the Institute of National Remembrance.

In 2009, the director of the Regional Museum, who has managed the museum since 1960, Longina Kowalczyk, who retired in 2002 and retired from it until September 1, was replaced by Grzegorz Osial.

The institution maintains close contact with other cultural institutions: museums, cultural centers, libraries and organizations conducting cultural activities. In the museum building is the seat of the Society of Friends of the Land of Łukowska, as well as the Łukowski Branch of the Association of People's Creators,

The museum is a source of knowledge about the region of Lukow, its history, culture and folk art. The activity of this institution has a great influence on the preservation of relics of folk culture of this region.

It is an object of constant social interest, especially teachers and school youth. It plays an important role in preserving the cultural heritage and historical region.
