Centrum Sztuki Filmowej / Kino Kosmos

The Center for Film Art combines many functions. It's a two-seater cinema, a movie theater with about 3,000 books and a visual library with a collection of 3,500 movies. It is also the first regional film library in Poland, as well as a professional producer. There is no such place in Silesia.

The idea of ​​the Center of Film Art as a modern multifunctional institution with extensive scientific, research, educational and production functions was born in the early 1980s in the circle of people associated with the Silesian Film Society under the leadership of Kazimierz Kutz. The need to create the Silesian Filmography was emphasized in the program resolution of the Congress of Culture in Upper Silesia in Katowice in 1998 and in the Silesian Province Development Strategy for the years 2000-2015.

The project of the Silesian Film Institute was co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund - 75%, from the Ministry of Culture - 16.5% and from the Śląskie Voivodship budget - 8.5% within the framework of the Integrated Regional Operational Program.

The building of the cinema "Kosmos" was thoroughly rebuilt, equipped with modern equipment and adapted to the needs of modern audiences. Silesian Film Archive is still growing, an important part of the Center's activity is the conservation and digitization of collections. With a wide variety of educational offerings, reviews, festivals, workshops and meetings, CSF is a creativity-friendly institution for filmmakers and audiences looking for more than just entertainment.

The aim of the modernization of the "Cosmos" was to transform the traditional cinema into a modern center promoting film culture and supporting the development of media education in the region. The center with its latest movie equipment, rich movie collections, convenient projection rooms, cozy café opens a new chapter of the history of the region with the cinema.
