**A museum in Vlissingen telling the vivid story of Zeeland’s maritime past, with great activities for kids. **

You’ll find the muZEEum in Vlissingen's town centre in a complex of historic buildings from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries and some from the 21st. This maritime museum tells the story of Zeeland’s seafaring past through 4 themes: water, work, glory and adventure. They keep it fun and engaging with interactive presentations and a huge collection of artefacts.

  • Discover the story of famed Dutch admiral Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter. That’s a bit of a mouthful! De Ruyter is regarded as one of the most skilled admirals in history, fighting English and French forces during his time in the navy. He was actually born in Vlissingen in 1607, not far from where the museum sits today.
  • The Golden Age: Explore the largest collection of items from a ship of the Dutch East India Company in the Netherlands. 17th Century Architecture: See the beautiful house belonging to the Lampsins family in the 17th century. These Dutch aristocrats ran a trading empire, owning over 300 training ships. 300! Three of the Lampsins family became the governor of the Dutch East India Company. Safe to say they were a pretty important bunch.
  • Exploring Easter Island: learn Dutch explorer Jacob Roggeveen, who lived just up the road in Middelburg, discovered Easter Island in 1722.
  • It's not all history: The museum also touches on Zeeland’s modern-day maritime experience and you can even learn how superyachts are built.

If you are interested in Zeeland, Vlissingen, history and all things maritime, be sure to check out the muZEEum.
