Have any of you history buffs out there heard of the Battle of Scheldt or the Zeeland Battalion? These often forgotten parts of WWII are a special piece of Zeeland's history and are brought to life at the Liberation Museum in Nieuwdorp, the largest museum in the province.

  • As you make your way through the museum, follow the story of young Kees Sinke who was called up for military service in 1939 during the mobilisation of the Dutch army.
  • Discover the Battle for the Scheldt in the museum's large park. Zeeland’s played a crucial role in the battle and in opening the harbour of Antwerp to Allied ships. This allowed Allied soldiers to get the essential provisions they needed to liberate the Netherlands and helped to end the war
  • Learn about the Zeeland Battalion, a group of brave volunteers who continued the fight to free the Netherlands after Zeeland’s liberation.

  • Need some refreshment? Stop off at one of the two museum cafes for a light snack or bit of lunch. In the summer, take a break on the outdoor terrace
