This windmill is the oldest of its kind in the world.
Built in 1631, Windmill de Otter is the only one left from a group of sawmills built in this area and is now a national monument.
It was used until the 20th century, but after a two-year restoration project that was initiated in 1994, the mill was put back in operation and began to operate on a regular basis. However, the windmill's placement in Amsterdam's built-up region was challenging, and it was made worse by the apartments that were built in the area. Therefore, the mill's owner, Stichting Houtzaagmolen De Otter, suggested moving it to Uitgeest.
Moving a national monument required approval from the government, and it turned out that the city council did not agree with this plan. That is why De Otter is currently remaining in its original site, however it is not in use.
