**Wander the woodlands of the Vennebroek in Paterswolde to discover an 1800s manor and a fairy tale forest. **

  • Enter the estate of Vennebroek to explore the woodlands. One of the best walks to see nature here is the walking route Friese Veen. Almost 5 km, the route follows the river to the lake of Friescheveen to a lookout point. Definitely stop to take a look at the lake here - it’s really pretty. After that, it’s a quick walk towards the Vennebroek estate where you’ll be surrounded by trees.
  • The beautiful estate home was built in 1848 by Joan Hendrik van Iddekinge. It is closed to the public, but there is an information centre in the old coach house. Really, though, the main appeal is the walking routes here.
  • Vennebroek is known locally for its pretty oak and beech trees. One surprise here is the vast amount of mushrooms - over 200+ different types of mushrooms grow in Vennebroek’s forest. You can try picking some mushrooms and cooking ‘em up for a local taste, but make sure you know what you’re picking! Wander the forest and you’ll also find a large sweet chestnut tree that’s over 350 years old.
