**Light up your trip to Utrecht and explore the city along the Trajectum Lumen route. **

We wouldn’t blame you for thinking that Utrecht’s city centre is super touristy! But there is a gem hidden in plain sight. Each night, the Trajectum Lumen route lights up the city.

From city streets to bridges and more, artwork made of lights decorate the city and illuminate your way to the next step. Unknown to most tourists who may stumble into a light or two, Trajectum Lumen is actually a 1.5 hour walk in total. Open everyday and totally free, we recommend Trajectum Lumen for anyone exploring Utrecht on foot. Stop at the bars and shops along the way for the best city experience in Utrecht.

We think this hidden gem activity is a must do on a trip to Utrecht when you’ve got a bit of spare time. Exploring a city after dark has never been so easy! The lights can also make for a cool photo opportunity or set the scene for a romantic evening stroll with a difference.

Highlights of the walk

  • Each artwork takes you to a historic part of the city and lets you see it in a new light. One of our faves is the Ganzenmarkt Tunnel. Covered in street art, the tunnel is lit up at night by light artwork designed by artist Erik Groen.
  • Another interesting artwork is the Halo on Sint-Willibrordkerk. The church itself is an impressive Gothic sight during the day, but the Halo at night designed by artist Titia Ex adds something a little extra!

Guided Tour

Want some extra info? An evening walk through Utrecht can be educational too if that’s your sort of thing. Every Saturday, from April to September, Trajectum Lumen takes on guided tours of the city along their route. You get to see some of the most historic sights of the city, get background information on the art, and all the deets you need on Utrecht.
