A medieval vault hiding underneath one of Amsterdam’s canal bridges!

  • Welcome to the widest canal bridge in Amsterdam! “Brug 9” crosses over the historic Singel canal and spans across 39 meters. Back in the day the bridge held a tower called Jan Roodenpoortstoren. It was demolished in 1829, but you can still see the outline of where the tower once stood. Make sure to check out the iconic statue of Dutch author Mutatuli, featured along the bridge.
  • For a truly impressive sight, you’ll have to look below: inside the depths of the canal bridge lies an old prison, complete with barred windows inside the dungeon! Whether you’re walking past or taking a boat ride through the canals, this is a sight worth seeing.
  • Underground exhibitions: Now that the bridge has been restored, the Torensluis foundation wants to keep it open and accessible to the public. That means you’re able to go underneath the canal bridge and check it out yourself! There are often events that take place including art exhibitions, debates, and even fashion shows.
