**Enjoy them from the ground, learn something new inside, or find a great view at the top. Check out these two village landmarks in Westkapelle. **

The small village of Westkapelle on the Zeeland’s Walcheren Peninsula has two landmark lighthouses: Lighthouse High Light and Lighthouse Lage Light. You’ll find the former in the heart of Westkapelle and the latter a little further out, sandwiched between the narrow beach and the N287.

Lighthouse High Light

Address: Zuidstraat 1, 4361 AJ Westkapelle

Of the two, Lighthouse High Light is probably the main attraction. The lighthouse has a museum inside where you can learn all about Zeeland and its nature in exhibitions. Discover what life was like for the old tower watchman. Be sure to head up to the viewing platform to get spectacular views of the Zeeland landscape.

This church tower-turned lighthouse is fully functioning today. Lighting the way for ships up to 37km away. Belonging to a church in the 19th century, it was the building’s only surviving structure after a fire in 1831. By the early 20th century the old church spire was replaced with a lantern and so became a land marker for the ships out in the North Sea.

Lighthouse Lage Light

Address: Zeedijk 5, 4361 SJ Westkapelle

Although being the smaller of the two lighthouses, Lighthouse Lage Light is also still in use today. The red and white striped iron tower dates back to the late 19th century. It’s colourful exterior and 16 meter height make it stand out amongst the expanse of sea on one side and flat, green land on the other.

In 2017 a small museum was added. It regularly features exhibitions about strandings and the area’s nature. At Lighthouse Lage Light you also get the bonus of being on the beach! It’s on the coastline towards another little Zeeland, Domburg. Once you’ve checked out the lighthouse, you can soak up the fresh, salty air and sea views and even wander along the coast to Domburg beach.
