**Travel back in time to the 15th century at the last and best monastery in Groningen. See medieval religious art and contemporary art all in one go! **

  • Tucked away in the village of Ter Apel lies a former monastery. Escape into the quiet atmosphere of the monastery. The building itself and its wooded surroundings are pretty - that alone would be enough to make our recommendations. But you’re getting a good deal for your money here as the monastery also has two contemporary art galleries.
  • Ter Apel Monastery first came to be in 1465. Although it was the very last monastery to open in the province, it’s the only one still recognised today out of the 34. And it’s super well preserved. Alongside it’s religious art held in its gallery, Ter Apel is one of the best places to see history in person in Groningen. It is the only rural monastery remaining in this part of Europe!
  • What is it like to be a monk? Visit the monk’s dormitories and even put on a habit to dress like a monk as you walk through the medieval corridors. The monastery garden is worth a look here too as it has over 200+ different types of plants. Then, go to the monastery shop and you’ll find Monastery Ter Apel beer.
