**Once a guesthouse for pilgrims, Geertruidsgasthuis is now a hidden gem of Peperstraat in Groningen. The garden is unknown to most tourists. **

  • Located just down the Peperstraat near cafes, pubs and shops is one historical surprise you would not expect. Free to visit - a trip to the Geertruidsgasthuis definitely pays. The former hofje, built in the 15th century, is a quiet paradise in Groningen’s city centre.
  • Sint Geertruidsgasthuis was once a guest house for pilgrims who came to the city to visit the church and holy relic of Saint John the Baptist. Locally known as the Pepergasthuis, most who come to the city wander past this hidden beauty without even knowing.
  • The best part of Geertruidsgasthuis is the courtyard garden, especially in the spring and summer when the flowers are blooming. These days, the former hofje is a residential area. Yeah, people actually live here and get to enjoy the pretty garden everyday. We’re jealous. Still, this hidden gem is a place to chill and rest your feet after wandering the city.
