A small museum about the history of Walcheren and WWII with a viewing tower.
Discover the history of this Zeeland peninsula at the Dike and War Polderhuis. From the Iron Age to WWII, learn everything you wanted to know about Westkapelle at this compact museum near the seafront.
- Observation Tower: head up the observation tower for some sea views and a lookout over Westkapelle.
- WWII Tank: just outside the museum, a Sherman Tank used by the Royal Marine Commands in 1944 is on display. It serves as a reminder of WWII and to honour the liberating soldiers.-
- Museum Garden: The small museum garden is freely accessible and has several artefacts and monuments to WWII.
- Museum Cafe: Polderhuis Museum also has a small cafe and tea garden serving local goodies. It's freely accessible, and it has a massive reading shelf full of books and info about the topics on display in the museum.
The museum also runs small exhibitions at the two lighthouses in Westkapelle: Lighthouse High Light and Lighthouse Lage Light. Head over to the former for an even better view of the village, sea and surrounding nature.

- The museum is fully accessible to wheelchairs.
- If you’re looking to walk or cycle in Walcheren, the museum shop sells biking and hiking maps for the area. Lookout for the “fietsknoopuntenkaart” or “wandelknooppuntkaart” maps. In the museum itself you can find a flyer with walking trails that take you around the Walcheren’s natural and historical gems.
Getting There
- By Car: Parking Westkapelle is next to the museum.
- By Bus: bus tops Westkapelle Markt and Westkapelle Zuidstraat are minutes walk away from the museum. Both are along the 53 bus route from Middelburg.
