The Nicolaï Church was built in the 12th century and stands in the city centre of Utrecht. This church was mainly the church of fishermen and skippers. It was the second parish church of Utrecht and covered a large area: not just Utrechters would go here, but also citizens from the smaller villages surrounding the city.
The church is possibly the first church in the Netherlands in which an organ was placed. Only the two-tower front of the original Romanesque church remains on the outside.
This part of the church is unusual because a parish church normally never had two towers: only cathedrals, monastic and collegiate churches.
Up until this day, it is unclear what the reason is that the church has two towers. In the 15th century, the church was radically renovated into a Gothic hall church. Parts of the interior, however, still have an identifiable Romanesque origin.
