Middelburg Cycle Route

Explore the north of Walcheren peninsula on wheels along this 42km cycle route around Zeeland's capital.

Travel like the Dutch do, hop on a bike and experience the best of the great Zeeland outdoors as you pedal along the Middelburg Cycle Route. Just pick up a rental bike from Middelburg station and you’re off!

At the station bike shop, you can rent normal bikes or electric bikes if you want a more leisurely journey. Prices are super reasonable at 9.50€ per day, plus a 50€ deposit per bike. Note that the deposit must be paid in cash, but deposit prices for groups can be negotiated.

Of course, you can also bring your own bike! If you do that, you can choose where you’d like to start the route as it's a loop. Address and transport info is based on a starting point at Middelburg station.

The 42km loop should take just under 3 hours. For the serious cyclists amongst you, this could be a half-day activity, but it's easily a whole day trip for the rest of us or if you just want to take your time and enjoy the scenery. There’s plenty of reasons to stop along the way!

Route Highlights

• Oosterscheldekering: the iconic Eastern Scheldt Storm Surge Barrier spans a massive 8km. It’s part of The Delta Works, a vast series of dams, dikes, barriers, and other water management mechanisms built following the devastating North Sea flood of 1953. It’s quite a sight to behold.
• Veere: a historic fortified old merchant’s town that was prosperous during the Dutch Golden Age. It sits on the huge Veerse Lake, which is a watersports hotspot and a stunning natural area.
• Westhove Castle: an impressive medieval castle once owned by Middelburg Abbey and the Catholic Church. It is now a youth hostel.
• Domburg: a beautiful seaside resort town with a great beach. The perfect place to stop for lunch or a bit of sunbathing before continuing on your way.
• Middelburg: the clue is in the name. Of course you’ll get the opportunity to check out Zeeland’s historic capital on the Middelburg Cycle Route.
