Wander off the beaten path and back in time as you walk along this historic, narrow cobbled street in Zeeland’s historic capital.

This local hidden gem is a little slice of historic Middelburg that you can experience as you stroll through the picturesque city. Feel like you’re walking through a film set as the 17th-century buildings lining the alley have been perfectly restored and maintained.

A red and white gate with a small door hides the alley, Kuiperspoort, located behind the Rouaanse Kaai canal. ‘Kuiper’ is the Dutch word used to describe the makers of wooden barrels, and that’s exactly what they did here. During the 17th and 18th century the wooden barrels that stored water, beer and wine on trade ships were made here on this street. Considering it's been a good few hundred years, not too much has changed! So, enjoy this off-the-beaten-path piece of Middelburg's history...if you can find it.

A stroll through the alley won’t take you too long, but soak up the quiet atmosphere, and enjoy the history on display. Snap a few pics too!

Tips and Tricks

  • The entrance to the alley is a little hard to find. It is a hidden gem after all! Keep your eyes peeled for the red and white door/gate at one end and an unassuming gap between the terraced houses along Dam Street. Both have a ‘Kuiperspoort’ street sign.
  • This is a small area to walk through, so head over to the nearby and equally historic Middelburg Abbey. Climb Lange Jan tower for a view over the city.

Getting There

  • By Car: paid parking close to the alley is available at the parking place Damplein.
  • By Bus: bus stop ‘Bierkaai’ is close to the gated entrance of Kuiperspoort. Buses 569 and 584 stop here.
  • By Train: the alley is a 5 minute walk from Middelburg station.
