A beautiful 17th century building in Middelburg housing a restaurant, cinema and pretty garden terrace.
Kloveniersdoelen is another one of Middelburg’s national monuments and another beautiful, historic building. Built in 1611, Kloveniersdoelen was originally a butil for the civic guards known as the Kloveniers. They were a trio of militia-types who were founded in Middelburg in the Middle Ages. Nowadays, in the building you’ll find a nice café-restaurant, an arthouse cinema and a lovely garden. It's quite the suntrap...when the suns out.
- Beautiful architecture: Kloveniersdoelen is an impressive building in Renaissance style. It's definitely worth popping by to have a look and take some pics, if nothing else.
- Restaurant: the grand café serves lunch, dinner and drinks. They grow and serve their own vegetables so the menu changes with the seasons. See an updated menu here.
- Garden Terrace: The restaurant has a lovely, spacious garden terrace. It overlooks the pretty garden, which looks like a mini orchard. In fact Kloveniersdoelen’s terrace has been voted as one of the best in the country. It's a lovely, quiet corner of Middelburg where you can escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the sun. There’s plenty of space for the children to play on the grass too!
- Middelburg Cinema: a small arthouse cinema is attached to the building. It shows a select programme of independent films.
